  • 21 to 23% (40 to 44 million of the 191 million adults in the United States) read at or below level 1 literacy - the lowest level of prose, document and qualitative literacy proficiencies.

  • 18% of adults in the state of Oklahoma read at or below level 1 literacy.

  • For Cherokee County that percentage increases to  20%.

  • Our congressional District, District 2, has a 20% level 1 literacy also.

  • 16% of adults in the city of Tahlequah are at or below level 1 literacy.
